Craft Your Own Zinnia Potpourri With This Delightful DIY Project

A hands-shaped bowl filled with a fragrant potpourri of flower petals, and a dried floral bouquet.

Potpourri is an excellent way to infuse your living space with delightful scents, and also add a pop of color, but it often gets a bad wrap. After all, when you think of potpourri, you likely think of your grandmother and her seemingly endless piles of dried petals. Maybe that elicits nostalgia, as it does in me. Or maybe it evokes some less pleasant feelings.
Fast forward to today — what's old is new again. Homemade potpourri concoctions are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Not only can you customize your own fragrance, but you'll also enjoy the benefits of a more natural and environmentally friendly mix — all at a fraction of the cost. So put down the Glade plug-in and pick up some flowers. Today we're making potpourri!

Materials Needed

  • Dried zinnia petals
  • Fragrant herbs (such as lavender, rosemary, or mint)
  • Essential oils (optional)
  • Decorative bowls or sachets

Instructions

Step 1: Dry Zinnias

  • Harvest zinnias when they're fully open.
  • Hang them upside down in a cool, dry place until completely dry. — This step is important to prevent mold and encourage color retention. Zinnias are known for retaining their beautiful colors long after they've dried, making for a stunning potpourri display.

Step 2: Mix with Dried Herbs

  • Combine the dried zinnia petals with fragrant herbs like lavender, rosemary, or mint.
  • Add a few drops of essential oil if desired. — Caution is advised with this step. Essential oils can be toxic if ingested. Should you live in a home with small children or pets, it may be wise to avoid the addition of essential oils.

Step 3: Display

  • Place your zinnia potpourri in decorative bowls around your home.
  • Refresh the scent by adding more dried herbs or essential oil as needed.

When your potpourri has lost its luster, add it to your compost pile to feed your next batch of flowers.

Rebekkah, owner of Ostara's Grove Vermont Flower Farm and Pumpkin Patch

Rebekkah grew up the middle child of three sisters in California. At 12, she and her sisters were separated, and she went to live with an aunt and uncle in Washington State. It was there that her love of floriculture blossomed. Her high school offered a Horticulture class, where she became the Floral Manager for the small-scale floral business within. That was all it took for Rebekkah to decide she wanted to one day own her own floral shop.

Unbeknownst to her then, this dream would be a journey that would take her across the country. Today, Rebekkah finds herself in a quaint Vermont town, living her dream with her three adorable cats and her supportive fiancé by her side. Her love for floriculture has blossomed into Ostara's Grove.
