Since I was a child, pumpkins have held a special place in my heart. Each fall, my family would visit pumpkin patches, crunching leaves underfoot as we searched for the perfect gourd. It wasn't just about carving; it was about finding a seasonal companion (since they wouldn't let me have a black cat, of course). And since I couldn't choose all of them, selecting the perfect squash was a longwinded task.
And then came that magical year as a young adult in California. Tossing rotting pumpkins into a compost pile led to unexpected sprouts. Soon, our backyard was a riot of vines. That harvest felt like alchemy — a secret whispered between me and the earth.
